The stakes are high when it comes to construction.

The amount of time, productivity, wages lost due to injury continues to surpass all other industries. And little time is spent investing in the proper training and equipment to reduce injury instances.

Stakes go in the ground effortlessly but can be an absolute nightmare to remove. Fortunately, with a tool like a stake puller, these fencing post pains can be eliminated without the risk of injury.

Haven't used one before? Here's what you need to know before using this highly efficient construction tool.

Leveraging the Stakes

A stake puller uses the simple science of leverage to maximize power. The tool itself is not heavy.

But when in use, it tremendously multiplies the force exerted on it. Well over a factor of ten in some cases.

Think of a car or pallet jack. Post pullers are easy-to-use tools that exert massive force object being pulled. Your back thanks you.

Types of Stake Pullers

All stake pullers have three main parts: the jaw, the base, and the lever. The base and lever remain largely the same throughout the models. The jaw changes depending on stake size and type.

When force is exerted on the lever the jaw grips around the post; dragging the post out the ground. Upon release, the jaw loosens and slides down the post, ready for the next effort.

Knowing this, there is a stake puller for every sort of stake removal situation you can think of.

The most common pullers are for fencing posts. Avid campers will find tent post pullers quite useful. There are models for construction posts and sign removal too.

There is even a post puller for those pesky T-post fences.

Ground Composition

Stake pullers operate best when the ground that the stake resides is solid and compact. The base requires firm ground for the tool to work correctly.

If the ground is not firm, the force exerted on the puller disperses into the ground; rather than the jaw.

If you find yourself in a situation like this (e.g. sand or muddy soil), lay a piece of wood or metal between the ground and the base. You can then proceed to use the stake puller again.

Why Use a Stake Puller?

Keeping in your team of laborers at peak productivity is critical to running a profitable construction business. Using the right tools increases efficiency. Reducing or eliminating injuries also means you'll be able to take on more work.

A stake puller is one of those rare pieces of equipment that promotes safety as much as it promotes getting a job done in an economic fashion.
