Did you know that back injuries account for more than 20 percent of all workplace trauma? Pulling metal fence posts out of the ground by hand is a daunting task and even dangerous for workers. Fortunately, there is an alternative: stake pullers.

Choosing stake pullers can be overwhelming since there are many configurations and options for these tools and at different price points. So you may have no idea where to start.

Stake pullers are great tools that use leverage to remove different types of posts from construction sites or farmland. They are a simple design but are a valuable asset for saving time and energy. They can replace the work of heavy machinery like hydraulics with a single worker.

Which stake pullers to select depends on your unique project and budget. The information below will help you narrow down the right one for your particular needs.

Types of Stake Pullers

Stake pullers are often made from steel, so they are quite durable. Sometimes they come coated with zinc or other materials to prevent rust or corrosion.

For most stake pullers, the main difference is the size and shape of the mouth or “jaw.” For instance, rebar pullers have a round circular mouth that can clasp the steel rod. A flat stake puller will have squared grooves that can fit around steel or wooden stakes.

Size is another major consideration. Smaller pullers are good for ground rods, rebar, or tent spikes under an inch in diameter. These are also more economical and can tackle most small posts.

More robust devices can tackle bigger jobs, generating upwards of 1600 pounds of upward force. Many larger pullers have systems that are better at extracting posts straight from the ground without bending them. This allows you to reuse stakes that would otherwise be useless and that you have to dispose of.

When comparing puller costs, be sure to take into account the size and force you need for your job. Compare apples to apples. You want a product that your team can use quickly and effectively.

Using a Stake Puller

If you’ve never used one, stake pullers can appear cumbersome and awkward to operate. In reality, the operation is very simple and straightforward.

There is no need to try to loosen the posts before using the puller. If you are removing stakes from soft soil, you may want to place a board under the base of the puller to support it.

Next, place the stand upright next to the fence stake, secure the puller’s “jaw” under a stud, and push the handle down. Depending on the depth of the stake, you may have to repeat this motion several times to completely remove it from the ground.

Now that you have an idea of what to consider when choosing stake pullers, you can determine which one is right for your project. Prominent stake puller providers can provide you with more information about these invaluable tools.
